Mayor Conchita Toribio-Delos Reyes of Carmen,
Bohol is likely to be the official candidate of the administration Liberal
Party for representative of her province, as indicated at the meeting of the
country’s municipal mayors in Manila where
Che Toribio Delos Reyes hobnobbed with local LP leaders led by Interior
Secretary Mar Roxas.
The official get-together of municipal mayors
was called by the LP leadership to firm up party support for Roxas who has been
anointed as LP standard bearer for next year’s presidential election. All LP-affiliated local leaders belonging to
the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) attended the event to
signify their loyalty to the administration party and choice of Roxas as
presidential bet.
Although not yet an LP member, Che’s attendance
at the exclusive LP bash spoke volumes about the political party that will
banner her congressional run for Bohol in 2016.
Che lost by a small margin in the 2013 midterm elections to current
Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto, who is an LP member. But recent developments tend to show that the
LP leadership has warmed up to Che more than Chatto.
One of the pictures taken during the ULAP
meeting showed Che in a serious huddle with Roxas. Another photo has Che holding the arm of
Roxas while in a cordial discussion.
An LP mayor from another Bohol town who seems
to prefer Che Toribio as official LP bet for congresswoman of the province believed
that Che’s high-profile attendance at the ULAP meet signaled her joining the
administration party.
The mayor said Che Toribio entry into the
LP’s celebration of Roxas’ endorsement by the President may be interpreted that
she’s already “in” as administration candidate for Bohol congressman. However, Che’s camp still would not say if
she is shifting her party affiliation.
With reports that Toribio-Delos Reyes is
poised to affiliate with the ruling party, local LP stalwarts in Bohol would
not confirm or deny it. They said it is
up to LP national leaders to decide on the matter.
Delos Reyes is preparing to contest the Bohol
governorship against Congressman Arthur Yap, a former agriculture secretary
under former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and a member of GMA’s
Lakas-CMD. Che announced this political
plan as early as last May when she visited Rep. Aris Aumentado at his house
during the fiesta celebration of Tagbilaran City.
Delos Reyes’ trusted lieutenants said that
everything is all set for her to gun for congresswoman in the third district
against Yap, who ran largely unopposed in 2010 and 2013 elections.
If Delos Reyes has been crisscrossing the 19 towns to prepare for her electoral bid in the district, Yap also activated his AYO or Arthur Yap Organization, taking sorties in mostly barangays, a municipal mayor said.
